Too Handsome? Brad Banned in Malaysia

The Asian country’s government bans a car ad featuring Brad Pitt because his looks would "plant a sense of inferiority among Asians."

A Toyota advertisement featuring Brad Pitt has been banned in Malaysia because it is "an insult to Asians," according to published reports.

In an official sanction, the Malaysian government ordered the ads to be pulled because the sight of non-Asian faces such as the 39-year-old actor’s would "plant a sense of inferiority among Asians," the county’s deputy information minister Zainuddin Maidin tells the national news agency Bernama.

The widespread ads, hawking Toyota Altis cars, were featured on TV, billboards and in newspapers across Asia and were reportedly a favorite target of fans who swiped the posters off public walls and put them up in their own bedrooms. (The ad does not appear in the U.S.)

"Why must we use their faces in our advertisements?" Zainuddin says. "Aren’t our own people handsome enough?"

He adds: "We barred the advertisement as it appeared as a humiliation against Asians."

There has been no comment from the Pitt camp.

Human line ‘nearly split in two’

By Paul Rincon
Science reporter, BBC News

Hunter-gatherers (National Geographic)
Humans diverged into separate populations for 100,000 years

Ancient humans started down the path of evolving into two separate species before merging back into a single population, a genetic study suggests.

The genetic split in Africa resulted in distinct populations that lived in isolation for as much as 100,000 years, the scientists say.

This could have been caused by arid conditions driving a wedge between humans in eastern and southern Africa.

Details have been published in the American Journal of Human Genetics.

It would be the longest period for which modern human populations have been isolated from one another.

But other scientists said it was still too early to reconstruct a meaningful picture of humankind’s early history in Africa. They argue that other scenarios could also account for the data.

At the time of the split - some 150,000 years ago - our species, Homo sapiens, was still confined to the African continent.

We don’t know how long it takes for hominids to fission off into separate species, but clearly they were separated for a very long time
Dr Spencer Wells, Genographic Project

The results have come from the Genographic Project, a major effort to track human migrations through DNA.

The latest conclusions are based on analysis of mitochondrial DNA in present-day African populations. This type of DNA is the genetic material stored in mitochondria - the "powerhouses" of cells.

It is passed down from a mother to her offspring, providing a unique record of maternal inheritance.

"We don’t know how long it takes for hominids to fission off into separate species, but clearly they were separated for a very long time," said Dr Spencer Wells, director of the Genographic Project.

"They came back together again during the Late Stone Age - driven by population expansion."

Family tree

Although present-day people carry a signature of the ancient split in their DNA, today’s Africans are part of a single population.

The researchers compiled a "family tree" of different mitochondrial DNA groupings found in Africa.

A major split occurred near the root of the tree as early as 150,000 years ago.

On one side of this divide are the mitochondrial lineages now found predominantly in East and West Africa, and all maternal lineages found outside Africa.

On the other side of the divide are lineages predominantly found in the Khoi and San (Khoisan) hunter-gatherer people of southern Africa.

Many African populations today harbour a mixture of both.

Although there is very deep divergence in the mitochondrial lineages, that can be different from inferring when the populations diverged from one another
Dr Sarah Tishkoff, University of Pennsylvania

The scientists say the most likely scenario is that two populations went their separate ways early in our evolutionary history.

This gave rise to separate human communities localised to eastern and southern Africa that evolved in isolation for between 50,000 and 100,000 years.

This divergence could have been related to climate change: recent studies of ancient climate data suggest that eastern Africa went through a series of massive droughts between 135,000-90,000 years ago.

Lead author Doron Behar, from the Rambam Medical Center in Israel commented: "It is possible the harsh environment and changing climate made populations migrate to other places in order to have a better chance of survival.

"Some of them found places where they could and - perhaps - some didn’t. More than that we cannot say."

Back together

Dr Wells told BBC News: "Once this population reached southern Africa, it was cut off from the eastern African population by these drought events which were on the route between them."

Modern humans are often presumed to have originated in East Africa and then spread out to populate other areas. But the data could equally support an origin in southern Africa followed by a migration to East and West Africa.

The genetic data show that populations came back together as a single, pan-African population about 40,000 years ago.

This renewed contact appears to coincide with the development of more advanced stone tool technology and may have been helped by more favourable environmental conditions.

"[The mixing] was two-way to a certain extent, but the majority of mitochondrial lineages seem to have come from north-eastern Africa down to the south," said Spencer Wells.

But other scientists said different scenarios could explain the data.

Dr Sarah Tishkoff, an expert on African population genetics from the University of Pennsylvania, said the Khoisan might once have carried many more of the presumed "East African" lineages but that these could have been lost over time.

"Although there is very deep divergence in the mitochondrial lineages, that can be different from inferring when the populations diverged from one another and there can be many demographic scenarios to account for it," she told BBC News.

She added: "As a general rule of thumb, when mitochondrial genetic lineages split, it will usually precede the population split. It can often be difficult to infer from one to the other."

The University of Pennsylvania researcher stressed it was not possible to pinpoint where in Africa the populations had once lived - complicating the process of reconstructing scenarios from genetic data.

The Genographic Project’s findings are also consistent with the idea - held for some years now - that modern humans had a close brush with extinction in the evolutionary past.

The number of early humans may have shrunk as low as 2,000 before numbers began to expand again in the Late Stone Age.

The power of play on the internet

New sites combine the idea of gaming and social networks

Game design and social networks are merging into one of the most persuasive forces on the net.

That assertion was made by a string of speakers at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco.

"Social networking is a game in and of itself," explained Jennifer Pahlka, co-chair of the conference.

She highlighted networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn that make public the number of friends a person has, posts how well a user does on certain applications and displays what level they are at.

"There are all these game dynamics built into the social web," said Ms Pahlka.

"So the idea that there is a game market here and a web market here isn’t true. The two are influencing each other."

Perhaps the greatest effect of that interplay can be seen in the rise and rise of the social gamer.

Recent figures by research firm Park Associates estimates that 34% of US adult internet users play online games weekly.

The moment you make the gaming more personal and meaningful, the better the experience for the user
Guy Ben-Artzi

Those figures present opportunities to developers and social networking sites alike.

For example MySpace has just announced the public launch of its "applications gallery" at Web 2.0. Central to those applications will be games.

Steve Pearman of the firm told BBC News: "This will take what you can do inside a social network to a new level. If you can provide something cool for my users I will be happy."

Meaningful play

One duo who believe they have a cool application that will appeal to the growing social gaming community are Galia and Guy Ben-Artzi.

The Ben-Artzi’s are a brother and sister behind a start up called Mytopia, which they describe as a social gaming community where everyone can play together.

It offers everything from chess to Sudoku and hearts to poker which you can play directly from their site or via Facebook, MySpace, Hi5 and Bebo.

By applying these gaming principles it helps build these thriving successful communities
Lyle Fong

"Social networks offer a revolutionary way for people to play with friends and communities that have meaningful value to them in their real life," said Guy Ben-Artzi, who confesses he used to be a gamer who would do anything to win.

"The moment you make the gaming more personal and meaningful, the better the experience for the user," he added.

"The ability to play with the people I care about and connect with them is what is appealing to me," explained Galia, who is a fan of Suduko and plays online with her mother.

"Logging in and playing with strangers was exciting when the internet was new but the modern web is personal and social and it is clear that the internet is being used for social purposes to connect people rather than isolate them."

Gaming principles

One hardcore gamer said the shift to social gaming was inevitable as Web 2.0 flourished.

Lyle Fong and his brother Denis, who once won a Ferrari in a gaming competition, were serious players who also set up Gamers.com as an online community for like-minded people.

He is now the CEO of Lithium Technologies, which makes software for companies such as Dell, AT&T, Sony PlayStation and Nokia using gaming principles.

"We build up these reputation systems with levels and rankings just as you would if it was a game and by applying these gaming principles it helps build these thriving successful communities."

As he eschews his hardcore background, Mr Fong admits that social gaming is here to stay and will only continue to grow for obvious reasons.

"If you look at these sites like Facebook and LinkedIn you can post notes and chat and swap photos but that’s not very engaging. Social gaming makes it fun and that’s really very neat."

Miley! Abigail! Zac! Top Teens Take The Bank In Hollywood

April 23, 2008, 2:58 pm PDT

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — They haven’t even graduated from high school yet, but already a ton of teens are making big bucks in Hollywood.

Miley Cyrus is one of the top earning stars still in school. According to People, at just 15, she’s earned $17.5 million from her tour alone. And with her big screen release, "Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert Movie," netting around $65 million, Miley will surely be able to afford plenty of her shopping weakness - Electra bikes, People reports.

At just 14, Angus T. Jones is already a TV veteran, having spent almost half a dozen years on "Two and a Half Men." As a result, he reportedly takes home a hefty paycheck - $1.2 million a year, People claims.

And he’s not the only one bringing in the big bucks. Tyler James Williams, 15, from "Everybody Hates Chris," reportedly also makes the same amount.

In the movie world, Abigail Breslin, 12, and Dakota Fanning, 14, earn salaries in the millions for each film they appear in.

Breslin reportedly cashes checks for $2 million a picture, while Dakota can take up to $4 million a project. But, People reports that neither girl has lavish spending practices. Abigail earns just $11 in allowance each week, while Dakota gets no allowance at all.

As for the older stars - as in just old enough to have graduated high school - Daniel Radcliffe, 18, is a top earner.

People reports that he’s expected to earn $50 million for the final "Harry Potter" films. His co-stars, Emma Watson, 18, will bank $4 million per film, the same figure 19-year-old Rupert Grint is expected to fetch.

R&B star Chris Brown, 18, dances away with about $18.2 million a year.

Over in TV land, Hayden Panettiere, also 18, nets around $30,000 per episode of "Heroes," but her product endorsements kick her end of year total up to around $5 million.

And Zac Efron, at just 19, will reportedly take in $3 million for "High School Musical 3."

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Daniel Radcliffe, the actor behind the boy wizard Harry Potter, is hunting for a mystery Australian girl who cast a spell on him at a film awards party, local media reported on Monday.

Radcliffe, who started playing Potter in the popular Harry Potter movies when he was 11, has often spoken about not being able to find a girlfriend.

But Sydney’s Daily Telegraph Newspaper said Radcliffe, 18, now wanted help to track down a woman he met briefly at a film event in Australia.

"She stared at me all night and I was going to get her number and then I couldn’t find her," Radcliffe told the newspaper.

"I must have walked around that party for an hour trying to look for this girl, like some sad pathetic dweeb, but it would have been worth it."

The Daily Telegraph has started its own search for the mystery beauty, asking the young woman to contact the newspaper.
